Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke’s chances of securing a second-term ticket under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have grown increasingly uncertain after the party suspended its 2026 governorship primary due to an escalating leadership crisis at the national level.

The primary, initially slated for December 2, was shelved after the state chapter announced that the turmoil at the national headquarters had crippled its ability to conduct ward and local government congresses needed to elect delegates.

In a statement, Osun PDP Chairman Sunday Bisi disclosed that Governor Adeleke had met all requirements including purchasing and submitting his nomination forms and successfully passing the screening exercise but said the national impasse had “derailed the party’s internal timetable beyond the state’s control.”

Bisi cautioned that unless the national leadership dispute is resolved in a manner recognised by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) before its December 15 deadline, Adeleke “may no longer be interested in seeking the PDP nomination for the 2026 Osun governorship election.”

Prime Business Africa reports that the deepening crisis marked by suspensions, counter-suspensions and legal disputes among top PDP officials has paralysed the party’s capacity to conduct valid primaries across several states, with Osun emerging as one of the most affected.

The latest development contradicts Adeleke’s earlier public stance in which he dismissed rumours of defection and reaffirmed his loyalty to the PDP just weeks ago. With INEC’s submission deadline fast approaching, the stalled nomination process now poses a significant threat to his re-election plans.

Political observers note that the unfolding situation may force Adeleke to either withdraw from the race under the PDP platform or seek an alternative party a move that could reshape the dynamics of the 2026 governorship contest in Osun State.

For now, the governor’s camp has maintained silence on his next move, but the narrowing political timeline suggests that decisive actions will be required in the coming days, both for Adeleke and the crisis-hit PDP.
