Octopus Energy Generation has just stepped onto the world stage, joining the European Commission, the Republic of South Africa and Global Citizen’s “Scaling Up Renewables in Africa” campaign.

The initiative, unveiled at the G20 Leaders’ Summit in Johannesburg, has already gathered $17.8 billion (€15.5 billion) in public and private commitments – the biggest coordinated push ever to expand renewable energy and grid infrastructure across the continent.

As the only British company in the coalition, Octopus is bringing its Power Africa Initiative to the table, promising to unlock up to $450 million for clean‑energy projects that span new solar and wind farms, modern transmission lines and digital tools that connect generation directly to homes and businesses. Those funds are expected to light up the lives of about 1.1 million people in Sub‑Saharan Africa, moving the campaign closer to its goal of delivering electricity to more than 17.5 million households.

The pledge builds on Octopus’s recent African milestones. The firm has already invested in MOPO, a solar‑battery pioneer that supplies portable, off‑grid power to underserved communities ¹, and is partnering with the Akuna Group to construct Sierra Leone’s first wind farm on Sherbro Island .

Zoisa North‑Bond, CEO of Octopus Energy Generation, summed it up: “Africa’s renewables story is about more than plugging people in – it’s about smart investment that sparks prosperity. The continent holds 60 % of the world’s solar potential yet captures only 2 % of global renewable investment. With our Power Africa Initiative we’re unlocking up to $450 million to power 1.1 million people and turn that vast clean‑energy resource into shared economic growth.”

Michael Sheldrick of Global Citizen added, “Even in a tough geopolitical climate, this campaign shows that when governments, business and civil society work together, we can accelerate renewable energy from generation to grids and beyond.
