According to witnesses, the truck crushed her leg before rescuers could get her to the hospital.
Since then, the incident has sparked outrage on social media, with the hashtag #JusticeForRuth gaining significant popularity. Celebrities, activists, and fans have joined calls for justice while voicing concerns about the training of heavy-duty vehicle drivers and traffic safety regulations.
The Dangote Group said in a statement released on Thursday, 14 August, that senior officials and insurance representatives visited the victim at Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital as well as the accident scene.

Following the recent road accident in Auchi, Edo State, involving one of our trucks, which sadly resulted in injury to Mrs. Ruth Otabor, senior officials from Dangote Cement Plc, together with our Insurance team, promptly visited the scene, engaged with law enforcement authorities, and visited the victim and her family at Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital, Edo State,” the company stated.
“This action reflects our unwavering commitment to the well-being of those affected. We are ensuring full support for Mrs. Otabor, including comprehensive medical care and appropriate compensation, in line with Dangote Group’s welfare policy.
“Our thoughts remain with Mrs. Ruth Otabor and her loved ones, and we wish her a full and speedy recovery.”
Phyna had accused Dangote Group of negligence, alleging that the police removed the truck’s license plate to obscure accountability.
She criticized the company’s initial response, demanding justice and proper medical care for her sister.
Celebrities like Kate Henshaw and social media activist VeryDarkMan amplified calls for justice, with #JusticeForRuth trending online.
However, the Dangote Group responded, assuring its commitment to transparency and cooperation with law enforcement.
