With less than 48 hours to the August 12 deadline for compliance with the Nigerian Police Force’s tinted glass permit regulation, motorists across the country are expressing growing unease over the absence of clear directives from law enforcement.
The anxiety follows the extension of the grace period earlier announced by the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, who in June gave motorists until August 12, 2025, to regularise their permits. Speaking at the time, Egbetokun said, “The grace period is to allow Nigerians who are yet to comply to take advantage of the extension to avoid any form of harassment or embarrassment from our officers.”

Security experts and transport stakeholders stress that clear communication and transparency are vital to build public trust and ensure compliance without unnecessary disruption.

As the August 12 deadline approaches, calls are mounting for the Nigeria Police Force to provide further clarification to motorists and the general public to avoid confusion and possible clashes.
Motorists have also complained about limited access to the official permit application portal and slow processing times. Lagos-based car owner Kennedy said, “The process is too slow. You apply online and wait for weeks without feedback. Now they are talking about enforcement.”
Civil society groups are calling for the police to clarify enforcement modalities before the deadline. Transport rights advocate Ifeoma Eze argued that the uncertainty could lead to abuse of power on the roads. “We don’t want a repeat of past situations where vague regulations became an excuse for extortion,” she said.
While the tinted glass regulation is designed to aid security agencies in combating crime, stakeholders insist that public trust depends on transparency, accessibility, and timely communication from the authorities.
