TCN Maintenance: It’s Not Total Blackout In Lagos – DisCos insist

July 29, 2025

Chief Executive Officer of the Association of Nigerian Electricity Distributors (ANED), Sunday Oduntan, has said Lagos residents will not experience a total blackout during the 25-day maintenance period being done by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN).

Prime Business Africa reports that the two DisCos in Lagos – Ikeja Electric and Eko – had during the week announced that there will be an interruption of power supply between 8 am and 5 pm daily, starting from Monday, 28 July to Thursday, 21 August 2025.

The DisCos said this is to enable TCN to carry out scheduled maintenance of the Omotosho–Ikeja West 330kV transmission line.

This has generated reactions from residents who expressed concerns about the impact of the power outage for 25 days.

However, addressing concerns of residents, Oduntan, said it is not a total blackout, but an interruption of power supply, assuring that would will be restored by 5 p.m. daily during the 25-day maintenance of the Omotosho–Ikeja West 330kV transmission line.

Oduntan, who featured on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Tuesday, highlighted the imperative of scheduled maintenance of power facilities.

Explaining why Lagos residents would experience power interruption during the 25-day maintenance exercise, the ANED CEO said that, unlike other countries such as the United Kingdom, Nigeria does not have reserve power that can be utilised in such a situation.

He said the system maintenance and upgrade is necessary to create a better situation for the power sector.

“What the Transmission Company of Nigeria is doing is to ensure that they maintain these transmission lines. They are the transporters of electricity from the point of generation to the point of distribution. Without them, we cannot supply electricity; without them, the producer of electricity cannot get it to the end user.”

He said failure to do regular maintenance of transmission lines could lead to the collapse of the system.

Assuring that electricity will be restored by 5 pm daily as promised, he said: “We now need to start believing in our institutions. I’m not from TCN; I speak for the DisCos. But I can tell you this maintenance has been planned over a long period. They know what they are doing, and they will keep to the schedule.”

On metering of customers, he said they have tried various schemes in an attempt to close the gap, but like the privatisation of the power sector, it is still a journey yet to reach the destination. He called for a collective effort of all stakeholders to address it.

Commenting on the planned month-long power outage, Chief Executive Officer of Financial Derivatives Company (FDC) Ltd, Mr Bismarch Rewane, said it would have a significant impact on the country’s GDP. According to him, the affected states – Lagos and Ogun- constitute about 30 per cent of Nigeria’s GDP.

Mr Rewane stressed the need to tackle the power crisis in Nigeria to boost industrial and economic activities.

“There is a power crisis in Nigeria. It has to be resolved,” Mr Rewane stated.

He said that for many companies in the manufacturing sector, including bakery, about 25 percent of their operational cost come from power.
