Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, Amina Mohammed, has praised the Kano State Government for its efforts toward sustainable development and social progress, pledging continued UN support to deepen the state’s alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Mohammed gave the commendation during a courtesy visit to Governor Abba Yusuf in Kano. While the visit also served as an opportunity to offer condolences on the passing of elder statesman Aminu Dantata and former President Muhammadu Buhari, Mohammed noted that her engagement with the state extended beyond condolences to strengthening strategic partnerships with the United Nations.

Highlighting Kano’s potential as a strategic economic and demographic hub, Mohammed said the state plays a crucial role in national development due to its youthful population and agricultural productivity. She applauded the state government’s initiatives in health, education, power, and digital infrastructure key areas she noted are critical to achieving the SDGs.
“Kano remains one of Nigeria’s most vital states in terms of population and potential. It is only right that we build resilient systems here, especially in education, health, and climate,” she said.
Governor Yusuf, in his remarks, outlined some of the administration’s recent developmental strides. These include the provision of solar-powered street lights, extensive tree planting campaigns, the creation of the Ministry of Power, the establishment of a disease control center and reforms in the state’s environmental and climate change sector. He noted that all of these initiatives were part of Kano’s broader commitment to the SDGs and climate action.
“Our vision is to build a sustainable Kano that can support future generations. We are repositioning critical sectors in alignment with global standards,” the governor stated.
In response, Mohammed assured Governor Yusuf of the UN’s continued support in advancing shared development goals. She pledged to strengthen collaboration through technical assistance and programmatic partnerships across priority areas such as public health, environmental protection, education, agriculture, and renewable energy.
The visit concluded with both leaders reaffirming their commitment to strategic cooperation aimed at uplifting communities and reinforcing inclusive, people-centered governance.
