Atiku said his resignation from the party takes immediate effect.

A  copy of the letter was shared on X by Atiku’s  Media Adviser, Paul Ibe, on Wednesday afternoon.

According to the letter, Atiku expressed his gratitude for the opportunity he was given by the party to serve as vice president of Nigeria for eight years (1999 to 2007), and also for being the presidential candidate of the PDP twice (2019 and 2023).

He said that as one of the founding fathers of the PDP, the decision to quit is a “heartbreaking” but it has become necessary for him to do so, given the situation of the party, apparently referring to the crisis currently rocking the opposition party.

The letter reads: “I am writing to formally resign my membership from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) with immediate effect.

“I would like to take this opportunity to express my profound gratitude for the opportunities I have been given by the party.

“Serving two full terms as Vice President of Nigeria and being a presidential candidate twice has been one of the most significant chapters of my life.

“As a founding father of this esteemed party, it is indeed heartbreaking for me to make this decision.

“However, I find it necessary to part ways due to the current trajectory the party has taken, which I believe diverges from the foundational principles we stood for. It is with a heavy heart that I resign, recognising the irreconcilable differences that have emerged.”

He wished the PDP and its leadership all the best in the future.

This formal declaration has laid to rest rumours earlier circulated on some media platforms, claiming that Atiku has left the PDP.

Atiku’s decision to leave the PDP comes amid ongoing moves to form a coalition party that will be used to challenge President Bola Tinubu of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general election.

Atiku and many other prominent politicians, including the  2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, came together recently and adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as the coalition party.

Former Senate President, David Mark, was appointed interim chairman, while former governor of Osun State and ex-Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, was appointed National Secretary.
