The Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 Presidential election, Mr Peter Obi, has declared his intention to contest again in 2027, promising to serve only one term of four years if elected.

Obi stated this during a live interactive session on X Space organised by Parallel Facts on Sunday.

According to a statement released on Monday by Ibrahim Umar Wase, spokesperson of the Peter Obi Media Reach, Obi dismissed rumours that he is in discussions for a joint ticket, including with Atiku, to run for office in 2027.

“I have not joined in any form of discussion on joint tickets, including with Atiku. If there is any form of agreement that will restrict me to 4 years in office, I will comply with the agreement and be ready to leave office by 28th May, 2031,” Obi stated.

Obi, who fielded questions from his numerous supporters, acknowledged being involved in coalition talks, but clarified that such an alliance must be such that prioritises tackling insecurity, reviving the economy, and boosting production to address food crisis, among others.

“If the coalition is not about stopping the killings in Benue, Zamfara, how to revive our economy, how to make our industries productive, how to put food on the tables of Nigerians… Count me out. Nigeria is currently at war. We need to do something about it,” Wase stated.

While calling for concerted efforts to work towards rescuing the country, Obi said: “I will bring stability in Nigeria within two years in office. Leaders of Nigeria should sit down in Nigeria and fix Nigeria.

He said his administration’s top priorities, if elected, would be on security, education, and poverty reduction, cutting costs of governance and shunning corruption.

“My family will not be involved in corruption. Funds will be channelled into critical sectors,” he stated

Addressing Labour Party Crisis

The former Anambra State governor said they are working hard to get INEC to endorse the Nenadi Usman-led Labour Party “based on the Supreme Court ruling.

Obi promised that his administration would ensure that elections are free, fair and credible, adding that strong opposition in party politics would be encouraged.

“I will prioritise security, education and pulling people out of poverty. To do this is by cutting the cost of governance and fighting corruption from day one.”

Obi criticised Tinubu’s overseas travels, especially President Bola Tinubu over his frequent foreign travels, especially the latest visit to St. Lucia.

The former Anambra State governor said: “In 2 years, Tinubu has not spent one night in any state in Nigeria apart from Lagos, yet he is going to spend 8 nights in St Lucia, a place smaller than Ajegunle.

“St. Lucia is about the size of Ilorin, Nigeria’s 10th largest city. Since assuming office, President Tinubu hasn’t spent a night in any Nigerian state outside Lagos. Now he’s spending 10 days in St. Lucia,” Obi stated.
