Leicester City have announced the sacking of head coach Ruud van Nistelrooy following the club’s relegation from the Premier League last season.

The 2015/2016 topflight champions will play in the Championship next season and are set to appoint a new man on charge of the coaching crew.

Leicester City were relegated with five matches left to play but the former Manchester United and Real Madrid striker saw out the season.

A statement by Van Nistelrooy in his X (Twitter) account in the aftermath of his sack, Van Nistelrooy expressed his gratitude for the chance to work at the club.

“I would like to personally think the Leicester City players, coaches, academy and all the staff I have worked with for their professionalism and dedication during my time at the club,” Van Nistelrooy noted.

The reports from some news sources in the UK indicate that former Everton and Burnley manager Sean Dyche had been touted as a possible replacement.

Van Nistelrooy was assistant coach to Eric ten Hag but took over the reins of the first team set up for a few weeks after Ten Hag was relieved of his job.

Eric ten Hag is currently the head coach of Bayer Leverkusen.

Leicester City will be looking for an instant promotion back to the Premier League as the Championship fixtures were released on Thursday.

The 2025/2026 Championship season will begin on 1 August.

Ipswich Town and Southampton were the other teams relegated to the second tier of English football along with Leicester City at the end of last season.

Most United fans wanted Van Nistelrooy to remain in the saddle after his caretaker role as he led the Rec Devils to some heartwarming wins but the agreement reached by United for the signing of Sporting CP head coach Ruben Amorim changed their plans.

Aside the imminent exit of Van Nistelrooy, Leicester may lose a few players in the transfer window as Premier League and foreign clubs circle for some of their best talents.
