He won the position during ASUU’s 23rd National Delegates Congress (NDC), which held at the University of Benin in Edo State.

He succeeds Prof Emmanuel Osodeke, of the Department of Soil Science at Michael Okpara University of Agriculture in Umudike, Abia State.

Piwuna won the keenly contested election, defeating his opponent, Prof Adamu Babayo of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU) in Bauchi.

The NDC, an ASUU unit, convened delegates from several universities around the country to discuss important challenges affecting higher education in Nigeria and elect new leadership.

Piwuna obtained his first degree in medicine (MBBS) from the University of Jos in 2000, as well as his master’s degree from the University of Malta, an island country in Southern Europe.

His assumption of the ASUU Presidency comes at a critical time for Nigerian universities, with ongoing discussions about funding, Earned Academic Allowances (EAA) for academic staff, mass labour migration from universities (brain drain), autonomy issues, and improved academic staff welfare.

His leadership is required to guide ASUU’s engagements with the government and other stakeholders in addressing the relevant issues.
