The Senate has suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan for six months following her dispute with Senate President Godswill Akpabio. The suspension was announced after the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Code of Conduct found her guilty of violating the Senate Standing Rules (2023 as amended).
During the plenary session, Akpabio stated that Akpoti-Uduaghan had brought the presiding officer and the entire Nigerian Senate to public disrepute. He read out the committee’s recommendation, which called for her suspension.

Some senators attempted to reduce the suspension period to three months, but the upper chamber upheld the initial six-month penalty through a majority vote. Despite appeals, the chamber remained firm in its decision, reinforcing the importance of discipline and adherence to Senate rules.
However, there is a possibility that the suspension could be lifted or reduced if Akpoti-Uduaghan submits a formal apology. Akpabio stated that the Senate would reconsider her case if she issues a written apology expressing remorse.
Senator Escorted Out After Suspension
Following the suspension, Akpoti-Uduaghan was escorted out of the chamber by the Sergeant-At-Arms. Before leaving, she strongly criticised the decision, stating, “This injustice would not be sustained.” Her reaction indicates a potential challenge to the ruling, although no official appeal has been confirmed.
