Lagos Assembly: Obasa Resumes As Speaker After Removal

Mudashiru Obasa, the former speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, has announced his return as the head of the legislative arm. Obasa made this declaration on Thursday after entering the speaker’s office at the Lagos Assembly complex.

Obasa Declares Himself Speaker

Obasa was removed from office on January 13  as reported by Prime Business Africa while he was outside the country. However, upon his return, he insisted that he remains the Speaker of the Lagos Assembly.

“I’ve resumed, and I remain the Speaker of the Assembly,” Obasa told reporters shortly after taking his seat in the speaker’s office.

Security Details Withdrawn from Meranda

His return came just hours after security operatives withdrew the security details assigned to his successor, Mojisola Meranda. Meranda was appointed as the new speaker following Obasa’s removal.

Segun Ajiboye, the chief press secretary to Meranda, confirmed the withdrawal of her security details. He also accused Obasa and his team of forcefully gaining access to the speaker’s office.

Uncertainty in Lagos Assembly Leadership

The situation at the Lagos Assembly remains unclear as both Obasa and Meranda claim to be the legitimate Speaker. There has been no official statement from the Assembly regarding the leadership dispute.

Observers believe the unfolding events could lead to further political tension in the state legislature. Many are waiting to see how the Lagos Assembly resolves the issue.

What Next for the Lagos Assembly?

With both Obasa and Meranda holding firm to their positions, the leadership of the Lagos Assembly remains uncertain. Lawmakers and political stakeholders are expected to intervene to prevent a crisis within the legislative arm.
