MTN Issues Public Apology

On Thursday, MTN took to social media to address the backlash. In a message written in a casual, conversational tone, the company acknowledged the frustration of its subscribers.

“To our 15G digital bundle lovers. You dey vex. We know. We know how upsetting it must have been to suddenly wake up to a 200% increase on your favourite digital bundle,” the message read.

The company admitted its mistake, saying “We could share several reasons, and provide explanations, but omo, all that one na story. We don cast. We get it and admit it. Let’s just say na mistake.”

MTN Appeals for Forgiveness

MTN further appealed to customers to “forgive and forget,” especially during the Valentine’s season. “In this love season, don’t stay angry with us. Please forgive and forget. What Led to the 200% Price Hike?

MTN’s decision to increase the price of its data bundle follows the Nigerian Communications Commission’s (NCC) approval of a 50% tariff increase in January. While MTN is the first telecom provider to implement the hike, other companies, including Airtel and Globacom, are expected to follow.

The price change comes as telecom operators cite rising operational costs as a key reason for increasing their tariffs. However, many Nigerians argue that such a steep hike will make internet access unaffordable for the average user.

NLC Demands Immediate Reversal

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has strongly opposed the tariff hike. The union has called on telecom companies to reverse the increase immediately, warning that the decision could push more Nigerians into digital exclusion.

The NLC, alongside consumer rights groups, has urged the government to intervene, stating that internet access is essential for communication, education, and business in the modern economy.

As of now, MTN has not indicated whether it will reconsider the price adjustment. However, customers remain hopeful that the company will take further steps to address their concerns.
