UNAIDS calls for an end to violence against women and girls

GENEVA, Switzerland, 25 November 2024 -/African Media Agency(AMA)/- Gender-based violence persists as one of the most appalling violations of human rights. It also thwarts efforts to end AIDS as a public health threat because intimate partner violence is linked with a heightened risk of HIV acquisition among women and undermines access to testing and treatment.

Globally, one in eight women and girls experiences sexual violence before the age of 18. Harmful gender norms, low prioritization of safe, qualitative and affordable sexual and reproductive health services, as well as fragile health systems heighten women’s risk of contracting HIV and prevent access to HIV services.

In addition, women and girls living with HIV are too often stigmatized by health service providers. They also experience pressure not to have children, forced and coerced sterilization or termination of a pregnancy. All violations of human rights.

“We must counter patriarchy and poverty to keep girls in school and we must provide women and girls safe spaces, economic opportunities and ensure their recognition and leadership,” said Winnie Byanyima, UNAIDS Executive Director.

“We must also fight rigid gender norms and stereotypes that perpetuate unhealthy masculinity and violence based on gender.”

Gender-related killings of women and girls are the deadliest outcome of gender-based violence with a woman being killed every 11 minutes. This is unacceptable. In 2022, the number of women and girls killed intentionally – nearly 89,000 – is the highest yearly number recorded in the past 20 years.  Women from key populations – transgender women, sex workers, and LGBTQ+ human rights defenders – are also at particular risk of femicide according to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR).

On the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women this year, the campaign kicked off with the theme ‘UNiTE to End Violence against Women and Girls: Towards Beijing +30.’  These 16 Days of Activism remind us that 30 years after the Beijing declaration – a blueprint for achieving gender equality and women’s and girls’ rights everywhere – the world is far from such a gender equal world.

UNAIDS remains committed to working collaboratively with governments, business, civil society, communities and especially women’s movements and networks to create a world where the rights and dignity of all women and girls are respected and protected, including women and girls living with, at risk of and affected by HIV.

Started in 1991, the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence is an international campaign that kicks off on 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and runs until 10 December, Human Rights.

Abia Killings: Go After Criminals Not Innocent Civilians, Nigerians Tell Military Nigerians have called on the military authorities to go after real criminals responsible for killing of five soldiers in Abia State on Thursday last week not harassing and arresting innocent civilians. The Nigerian Army had after the ugly incident that occured at Obikabia Junction in Aba the commercial hub of the state released a statement vowing to retaliate over killing saying “accordingly, it is absolutely imperative that the military retaliate against this dastardly act against troops. The military would be firece in it's response. We would bring overwhelming military pressure on the group to ensure their total defeat.” Subsequently, videos trending online showed military officers deployed to Abia raiding the area in apparent search for criminals who killed their colleagues. Some clips showed soldiers gather some people in the area.and interrogate them. There were also reports that soldiers have been harassing many residents of the area since Friday. Some Nigerians criticised the act saying that military officers are not suppose to be in city centres because the country is not at war. “Soldiers are supposed to on the front line. Why the city? Are we at war?” Another X user, Alani 10Lions one Elephant cried out. According to a Premium Times report, spokesperson of the 14 Brigade of the Nigeria army in Ohafia, Abia State, Innocent Omale, confirmed the arrest of some residents but said they were later released. Aba residents complain over the actions of the military in retaliation to the death of their men. Mr Christian Ekocha, who is a resident of the area claimed that there have been choppers and helicopters flying around the area numerous times a day. “There was even a rumour that soliders opened fire on civilians in Ngwa road. Although, I have not confirmed the authenticity of the information. But youths are being harassed and interrogated by these military personnels,” he added. Nigerians on their X handles urged the military not to harm innocent civilians in a quest for retaliation. “Dropping military men is unacceptable. Go hard on the criminals and not the armless citizens,” Adewale ‘Damilare urged the military. Netizens also called on the Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, to intervene so that the military would not take catastrophic actions against citizens. “Howbeit, this is urging Alex Otti to swoop into action to meet with the Nigerian army chief, Lt. Gen Taoreed Lagbaja to call his boys to order. As in their usual characteristics, they are now setting the cart before the horse in Aba, Abia state, just like they did in Okuama community, in Ugheli south LGA of Delta State in March 2024,” Mr Ike God said on his X handle. Recall that in March, 17 military personnels were killed in Delta state, during a peace mission. The community was razed down by some unknown men some days later and the residents alleged it to be the military men in retaliation. Nigerians fear that Aba might experience similar fate.
