#EndSARS Anniversary: We’ve Released All Detained Protesters - Police

The Nigeria Police Force, Lagos State Command, has announced that it has released all protesters detained on Sunday for participating in the #EndSARS memorial.

Prime Business Africa had reported that police operatives arrested protesters who at the Lekki Tollgate on Sunday to mark the 4th anniversary of the brutal killing of #EndSARS protesters on 20 October 2020.

Not less than 18 protesters who gathered for the #EndSARS memorial at the Lekki Tollgate were arrested.

This drew reactions from Amnesty International, civil society organisations and other human rights groups and individuals who condemned the action and called for their immediate release from police custody.

In a terse statement via X on Sunday, the Lagos Police Command spokesperson, CP Benjamin Hundeyin, said: “All protesters in our custody have been released. CP Olanrewaju Ishola was on ground at the SCID to personally see to that.”

Also, human rights lawyer and activist, Inibehe Effiong, confirmed that the protesters have been released.

“We have secured the release of all the 22 activists who were arrested this morning at the Lekki Toll Gate while commemorating the 4th anniversary of the Lekki massacre’” Effiong stated.

“We had a discussion with the Commissioner of Police who came over to the State CID in respect of the matter.”

He also confirmed that items seized from the protesters were also returned to them.
