Sixth National Grid Collapse in 2024
On Monday, October 14, 2024, Nigeria’s National Grid collapsed again, plunging the country into total darkness. This marks the sixth time the grid has failed this year, deepening concerns over the stability of the power sector.

This frequent breakdown of the National Grid has intensified the challenges facing the Nigerian power sector, frustrating citizens and businesses alike. The blackout has affected many regions across the country, with no official explanation provided so far.
No Official Statement from Authorities
Despite the widespread impact, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), which manages the National Grid, has yet to issue an official statement explaining the cause of this latest collapse. The public is left in the dark regarding how long the outage will last or what steps are being taken to prevent future grid failures.

Previous National Grid Failures
This is not the first time the National Grid has collapsed this year. Nigeria experienced its first blackout of 2024 on February 4, when the grid dropped from 2,407 MW to just 31 MW by midday and completely shut down by 1:00 PM. Another collapse occurred on August 5, marking the fifth blackout of the year.
The consistent failures of the National Grid highlight the need for urgent reforms in the power sector. These collapses disrupt daily life and hamper economic activities, as businesses struggle to operate without reliable power.
