Chelsea led twice through a Thiago Silva header and a great finish from the edge of the box by Mason Mount but the Blues were pegged back with goals by Manuel Lanzini (penalty) and Jared Bowen.

With four minutes left on the clock, left back receiving the ball from a throw-in let fly a swerving shot that caught goalkeeper Edouard Mendy off guard.

The top three teams in the league were separated by seven points but Chelsea’s defeat opened the way for Liverpool in second place or even Manchester City in third to overtake them.

West Ham have 27 points on the board, four points ahead of Arsenal in fifth place who face Everton on Monday night at the Goodison Park.
