EdoDecides2024: Four Reasons Why Registered Voters May Not Vote-INEC

As the much awaited Edo Gubernatorial election got underway this morning, INEC officials have been lecturing voters on the dos and don’ts of the exercise taking place pari-pasu in all the 18 local government areas of the state.

Voters were told that for them to vote ,their names and photographs must be properly captured by the BVAS being used for the election and which have been distributed to all the voting polls.

In one of the polling Centres located at Ordero Girls Secondary School, Ward 11, Benin City, an INEC adhoc staff was seen reeling out the dos and don’ts as eager voters listened with rapt attention.

A voter according to him must have his on her name not only on the list of eligible voters, but must also be captured by the BVAS to be able to vote.

Where the BVAS is unable to capture a voter he further said, such a voter will not be allowed to vote. Voters were also given and advised to note the identification number of the polling centre, even as the empty ballot boxes were displayed for all to see and confirm that it is empty before commencement of voting.

He further gave the Identification numbers of the Polling station and its various points as INEC 22582106, INEC 22582107, INEC 22582108 and INEC 22582109.

Primebusiness.africa deduced from the INEC pre-voting briefing that there are Four reasons that may disenfranchise a voter from exercising his right in today’s election.

*Where a voter’s name is not on the list of eligible voters in INEC Register.

*Where a voter’s name is on the list of eligible voters but is not captured by the BVAS (Bimodal Voter Accreditation System)

*Where a voter had applied for transfer to another polling station but has not gone there to rectify the transfer and be captured in his or her new polling station.

*Where a voter has no voter’s card or has lost the voters card without evidence of having reported the loss or done any affidavit or police report to affirm the said loss of voter’s card.

Fifteen men and one woman are locked in a battle to the finish in today’s election. Candidate of the Accord Party Kennedy Iyere had earlier announced his withdrawal from the race citing desire to serve in a higher national capacity.
