FORMER Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator Pius Anyim, has clarified the issue of what happened between him and operatives of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Senator Anyim said, he was never invited by the anti-graft agency but went to their office in Abuja on Sunday on his own volition to clarify issues regarding his being fingered in an ongoing case involving some persons.
Join our WhatsApp ChannelIn a statement signed by Senator’s Media Adviser, Sam Nwaobasi, the former SGF said he said he reached out to the EFFC and offered, to go and clarify whatever liking his name and hence his appearance in the commission’s office on Sunday, 24th October, 2021.
Anyim said that after his engagement with officers handling the said matter, to his surprise he was asked to remain in the commission’s office, and thereafter given was a condition for which he would be released.
The statement reads, “After his engagement, during which Senator Anyim was as candid as could be, to his utter surprise he was told he would not be going home that day. By the next day, the EFCC gave the conditions for his release which were met promptly.
“It took up to Tuesday the 26th for EFCC to complete their processes after which he was allowed to go home.
“Senator Anyim, as a law-abiding citizen, will always submit himself to any process required by any agency of the government in the discharge of its duties.”
Nwaobasi said the Senator is not worried about being invited by the EFCC adding that he remains committed to the cause of building a better Nigeria, notwithstanding any persecution.
Anyim who was a Senator between 2000 and 2003 and appointed as SGF by Goodluck Jonathan administration, has been in the news for being grilled by the EFCC over allegations of corruption and diversion of public funds.
Some sources said it was related to a case involving former Minister of Aviation, Senator Stella Odua that has to do with the alleged diversion of N780 million.
