Hunger Protest Right, But Caution Should Be Applied - Onitsha Catholic Bishops
Catholic Bishops

The Catholic Bishops of Onitsha Ecclesiastical Province have said  Nigerians have right to protest against economic hardship ravaging the country, but caution should be applied to prevent unmanageable chaos that can arise from such protests.

Rising from their second meeting of the year, 2024, the bishops, in a communiqué, affirmed that aggrieved persons had the right to express their grievances in a civil and peaceful manner. They pointed out that it would be unconstitutional for anyone who had hurt others to prevent them from expressing their pain, noting that it would amount to beating a child and preventing such a child from crying.

They argued that rather than suppress peaceful protests, government should engage the citizenry with a view to addressing their complaints.

The bishops of the Onitsha Ecclesiastical Province, comprising the Archdiocese of Onitsha, dioceses of Enugu, Abakaliki, Awka, Nsukka, Awgu, Ekwulobia and Aguleri, said much as they understood the pains of the masses, care must however be taken to avoid an escalation that would eventually be counterproductive.

To this end, they appealed to the protesters to consider calling off the protests if they could not guarantee the safety of the citizenry. They said this was necessary in order not to shake the foundations of the country that were already cracked.

The bishops urged the Federal Government to take concrete steps to assuage the concerns of aggrieved citizens beyond its usual palliative measures, noting that such palliatives were irritating and amounted to mere distractions, as well as providing avenues for corruption.

They, therefore, called for prayers and more dialogue to enthrone peace and stability in the country.

The communique was jointly signed by the metropolitan Archbishop of Onitsha,  Archbishop Valerian Okeke, who’s the chairman; and the Bishop of Abakaliki , Most Rev Peter Okoye, who’s the secretary; as well as the bishops of the rest of the dioceses, including the Bishop of Ekwulobia Diocese, His Eminence, Peter Ebere Cardinal Okpaleke.
