Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu has created the Ministry of Livestock Development.

The creation of the ministry is part of efforts to resolve the perennial dispute between farmers and cattle herders across the country.

The creation of the ministry is also to boost productivity across livestock value chain.

The new ministry was announced during the inauguration of the Renewed Hope livestock reform implementation committee at the State House, Abuja, on Tuesday.

Present at the Inauguration were the Vice President, Kashim Shettima, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, among other members of Tinubu’s cabinet.

The committee which is to be chaired by the President, with the former chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Attahiru Jega, as the Deputy Chairman, is mandated to provide sector-focused solutions to address the age-long farmers-herders crisis.

Prime Business Africa recalls that President Tinubu had in September 2023, approved the establishment of the Presidential Committee dedicated to the reform of the livestock industry and the provision of long-term solutions to recurring clashes between herders and farmers in the country.

The National Livestock Reforms Committee chaired by the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje, gave the recommendation for Tinubu to create a “Ministry of Livestock Resources.”

It was part of the 21 recommendations contained in a document submitted to President Tinubu then.

The committee, according to the President, would collaborate with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security to find long-term solutions to the long-standing conflict between farmers and herders while guaranteeing the safety and financial security of every Nigerian.
