World Bank Grant for Zambia
The World Bank has approved a $208 million grant for Zambia to help mitigate the severe social and economic impacts of the ongoing drought.
The country’s finance ministry announced on Tuesday, highlighting the importance of this assistance in addressing the pressing needs of the affected population.

Drought Impact in Southern Africa
Southern Africa is currently experiencing one of its worst droughts in years, attributed to El Nino conditions and increased temperatures due to greenhouse gas emissions.
Zambia, along with neighboring countries Malawi and Zimbabwe, has declared a state of disaster. The drought has severely disrupted food production, threatening the livelihoods of millions of people.
Assistance to Affected Households
The World Bank grant is designed to provide emergency relief to those most affected by the drought. “Specifically, it will support at least over 1.6 million households across 84 drought-impacted districts with emergency cash assistance over 12 months,” Zambia’s finance ministry detailed in its statement.

This aid aims to offer immediate relief and help stabilize the food security situation in the hardest-hit areas.
IMF’s Additional Support
In a related development, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) recently increased its financial assistance to Zambia from $1.3 billion to $1.7 billion.
This additional support is intended to help the nation manage the economic fallout from the drought and strengthen its overall resilience.
Christine Lagarde, Managing Director of the IMF, emphasized the importance of international cooperation in addressing such crises. “The international community must come together to support nations facing severe environmental challenges. The IMF is committed to helping Zambia through this difficult period,” she said.
Looking Ahead
As Zambia navigates through this crisis, the World Bank and IMF’s financial assistance will play a critical role in mitigating the drought’s impact.
The funds are expected to not only provide immediate relief but also support long-term recovery and resilience-building efforts in the affected regions.
“International support is crucial at this juncture,” Finance Minister Musokotwane reiterated. “We are confident that with these resources, we can better address the needs of our people and begin the process of recovery.”
