The International Rescue Committee (IRC) has expressed deep concern over the worsening humanitarian situation in northwest Nigeria due to escalating insecurity.
Recent clashes between armed groups in Zamfara and Sokoto states have led to widespread displacement and loss of lives, with at least 10,000 people forced to flee their homes and 92 reported deaths in March and April alone. Many others have been abducted during these attacks.

It’s a dire situation,” remarked Babatunde Ojei, Country Director for the IRC in Nigeria. “These attacks on innocent civilians highlight the pervasive violence that has plagued northwest Nigeria. We urge all parties involved to prioritize the safety of civilians and abide by humanitarian laws.”
The IRC emphasized that the majority of those affected by the violence are women, leaving them particularly vulnerable to exploitation and abuse. With families now living in makeshift shelters with limited resources, there is an urgent need for humanitarian assistance to provide essential services such as water, sanitation, healthcare, and protection.

The crisis in northwest Nigeria is part of a broader pattern of instability in the region, marked by long-standing ethnic and religious tensions and a surge in criminal activities including kidnappings and thefts along major highways. Over the years, this has led to widespread displacement, exacerbating the suffering of communities in the affected areas.
Operating in Nigeria since 2012, the IRC is actively involved in providing both immediate relief and long-term support to affected populations.
In Zamfara and Katsina states, as well as through partner organizations in Sokoto, the IRC offers a range of services including healthcare, education support, women’s empowerment, water and sanitation, and economic development initiatives.
As the humanitarian situation continues to deteriorate in northwest Nigeria, the IRC remains committed to delivering aid and supporting communities in their time of need. However, sustained efforts and collaboration from all stakeholders are crucial to addressing the root causes of the crisis and ensuring the safety and well-being of the affected population.
