Nigeria’s international, Taiwo Awoniyi, was at fault as his former club Liverpool snatched a late 1-0 win at the City Ground against Nottingham Forest on Saturday evening, reports Prime Business Africa.

Just when it seemed that the Reds were about to hand the initiative to both Manchester City and Arsenal in the title race, Darwin Nunez pounced on a clumsy clearance by the Super Eagles star to snatch the unlikeliest of goals in the last minute of a tensed game.

Liverpool last won at the venue of Saturday’s game in the 1938/1939 season – long before the Premier League era.

Nottingham Forest had numerous scoring chances especially on both halves but failed to capitalise on them.

Anthony Elanga was presented with two opportunities in the first half but he wasted them on both occasions.

Then in the second half, Awoniyi had teammate, Callum Hudson-Oodi finely placed to receive his pass but he went for glory albeit won a corner kick for his effort.

Just as the fans in the stands and those who support Arsenal and Manchester City were gleefully looking at their wristwatches, Awoniyi’s poor clearance was the gain of Alexis Mac Allister whose cross was headed home by Nunez.

Manchester City will face city rivals, Manchester United on Sunday while Arsenal visit Sheffield United on Monday night.
