Arab states are engaged in striking a ceasefire deal aimed at ending the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, Palestine.

The proposal, reported by the Financial Times on Thursday, reveals a multifaceted plan that includes the release of Israeli hostages, the normalization of ties between Saudi Arabia and Israel, and the establishment of a Palestinian state.

An unnamed Arab official disclosed that the potential normalization between Saudi Arabia and Israel could be a key element in achieving broader stability in the region.

Central to the proposed deal is a condition that the United States and European governments formally recognize a Palestinian state, allowing it full membership in the United Nations. The aim is not only economic benefits but a genuine sense of hope for the Palestinian people, as emphasized by a senior official involved in the negotiations.

This initiative follows comments by Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan at the World Economic Forum, stating, “We agree that regional peace includes peace for Israel, but that could only happen through peace for the Palestinians through a Palestinian state.”

The momentum toward Saudi-Israeli normalization had been progressing before a tragic event on October 7, when Hamas launched a mass terror attack on Israel, claiming the lives of over 1200 people.

Prior to this incident, US and Saudi officials were in discussions about potential Palestinian concessions to the deal, such as a freeze in settlement expansions in the West Bank and increased support for the West Bank’s governing Palestinian Authority.

Amid growing concerns and calls for peace, these diplomatic endeavors mark a departure from the status quo and suggest a potential turning point in the complex dynamics of the Middle East.
