Baseline Scenario: Optimism Amidst Caution

In this positive outlook, macroeconomic indicators suggest a decline in inflation, prompting central banks to consider rate cuts.

However, the U.S. Federal Reserve might hold rates steady until June before gradually reducing them. Defensive assets like gold and bitcoin might gain favor amidst uncertainty, impacting global asset rebalancing by March.

While the U.S. economy drives global markets, improvements in Europe’s manufacturing and the UK’s labor market could mark a moderate upturn.

Potential rate hikes by the Japanese Central Bank and reduced geopolitical tensions in conflict zones further shape this scenario.

Kar Yong Ang from Octa highlights traders’ strategies, emphasizing an uptrend for gold and bitcoin until mid-March and advising a sell-off of the U.S. dollar afterward.

Non-Basic Scenario: Recessionary Concerns

Should the labor market falter despite stabilized inflation, excessive interest rates might strain the economy.

This could trigger declines in bond yields, leading to wider market repercussions. Corporate cost-cutting measures could hamper consumer spending, potentially escalating unemployment rates, and financial distress by mid-2024.

By the latter half of the year, central banks might resort to Quantitative Easing (QE) to support corporations and labor markets, while the Bank of Japan is unlikely to alter its negative interest rate policy. Defensive assets like gold, oil, gas, and bitcoin might see sustained growth until September 2024, as per Kar Yong Ang’s analysis, but post-September, unpredictability could intensify due to the delayed effects of QE.

Both scenarios converge until mid-March, after which market dynamics sway between risk-off and risk-on sentiments, unveiling trading opportunities amidst the evolving landscape.
