Deputy Senate President Moves To Retain Shoprite In Kano Amidst Closure Plans In 2024

Senator Barau I. Jibrin, the Deputy President of the Senate, has taken a proactive stance against the announced closure of Shoprite’s sole branch in Kano, vowing to intervene and impede the supermarket chain’s departure from the region.

Expressing his concern over the potential economic impact of the departure, Senator Jibrin stated, “We will not fold our hands and allow them to leave,” highlighting the significance of Kano as a commercial hub in northern Nigeria and the abundant business prospects it holds.

Senator Jibrin’s spokesperson, Ismail Mudashi, confirmed that plans are underway for a meeting between the Senator and Shoprite’s management. “The Office of the Deputy President of the Senate has set machinery in place to halt the exit of Shoprite from Kano State,” Mudashi remarked. He further added, “We will do everything we can to encourage them to rescind their decision and stay in Kano.”

This initiative follows Shoprite’s announcement of ceasing operations in Ado Bayero Mall, Kano, citing the prevailing financial challenges faced by the mall and the harsh business environment in the country.

The circular issued by the retail giant expressed regret over the decision, mentioning the impending layoff of its employees once operations cease on January 14, 2024.

In response, Shoprite assured affected employees of support during the transition, emphasizing their commitment to assist in finding new opportunities within the company. They encouraged employees to explore vacant positions in other existing stores across the country.

The impending closure, despite being a business decision, has sparked concerns regarding its impact on the local economy and the workforce.

With Senator Jibrin’s proactive intervention, hopes are high for a dialogue that could potentially overturn Shoprite’s decision and retain its presence in Kano.

The meeting between Senator Jibrin and Shoprite’s management is anticipated in the coming week, where the fate of Shoprite’s Kano branch will be a focal point of discussion, aiming for a resolution that benefits both the company and the community it serves.
