Former Chinese Bank Manager Sentenced To Life Imprisonment In $325M Corruption Scandal

In a decisive move reflecting China’s stance against corruption, Xu Guojun, once at the helm of the Bank of China branch, has been handed a life sentence for masterminding one of the nation’s high-profile corruption cases of $325 million.

This landmark conviction is emblematic of President Xi Jinping’s relentless anti-corruption campaign, primarily targeting the colossal $60 trillion financial sector.

Xu, along with two accomplices, exploited vulnerabilities within the Bank of China’s fund management system, pocketing  2.3 billion yuan through falsified loans.

Although efforts have led to the recovery of over 2 billion yuan, Xu’s return to China from the US, where he fled in 2001, culminated in his conviction without an appeal.

Stripping Xu of political rights for life and confiscating his assets underscores the severity of the consequences. This high-profile case is part of a broader crackdown affecting numerous banking officials and executives.

Notably, President Xi Jinping has intensified scrutiny on the “hedonistic” lifestyles of bankers, emphasizing the need for a moral overhaul within the financial sector.

This sentencing echoes recent similar actions within the state-controlled banking sphere.

Former Bank of China chairman Liu Liange’s arrest on allegations of bribery and unauthorized lending, coupled with Wang Bin’s life imprisonment for bribery as China Life Insurance’s ex-chairman, demonstrate the escalating efforts to root out corruption.

The sustained drive against financial malfeasance shows no signs of abating, with authorities reiterating the ongoing nature of the crackdown earlier this year.
