In the wake of public outrage over extravagant budgetary allocations, the Lagos State Government has responded to the viral accusations by Funso Doherty, justifying its procurement decisions as being within the bounds of Nigeria’s economic conditions.
Prime Business Africa reported that Funso Doherty, a figure in Lagos politics and a chartered accountant, has stirred controversy with revelations regarding the allocation of funds in the Lagos State Government’s 2023 budget. In an open letter addressed to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Doherty shed light on extravagant expenditures, including N400 million allocated for a charter plane, N440 million for SUVs, and N7 million for fragrances.

“The perception of excessiveness regarding vehicle purchases and diffuser expenses should be examined concerning need, justification, and value for money,” the government stated, acknowledging the public sentiment.
However, the government clarified that the reported allocation of N2 billion for rechargeable fans and lights for the deputy governor’s office was inaccurate. Onafowote emphasized that the correct figure stood at N2,017,840.00, dispelling the misconception portrayed by Doherty.
He highlighted specific awards from the Public Procurement Agency’s report for the second and third quarters of 2023, suggesting a necessity for closer examination.
The government’s response has sparked a mixed reaction among the populace, with some acknowledging the need for scrutiny over expenditures, while others remain skeptical about the justifications given by the authorities.
The controversy continues to raise questions about government spending and accountability, prompting calls for greater transparency in budget allocations and procurement processes across the state.
