Nigerian Govt Defends 2023 Supplementary Budget Amid Obi’s Criticism

In a rebuttal to the criticism by Labour Party’s Peter Gregory Obi, the Federal Government defends the controversial 2023 supplementary budget, labeling it as a bold and necessary move to tackle economic challenges.

Prime Business Africa had earlier reported that Obi criticized the supplementary budget on his X account (formerly Twitter), calling out what he deemed as insensitive allocations to presidential luxuries instead of addressing the pressing food crisis.

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, fired back at Obi’s claim of insensitivity, asserting in an official statement, “The broad provisions in the supplementary budget is a reflection of President Tinubu’s strong desire and eagerness to support the vital functions of government, address urgent security needs, and fast-track the country’s recovery process.”

Idris urged Obi to delve into the details of the N2.17 trillion supplementary budget, highlighting its allocations for essential sectors aimed at strengthening the country’s economic foundations and improving living conditions.

“The inclusion of items such as a presidential yacht, jets, and luxury SUVs have been meticulously scrutinized to ensure efficient utilization of public funds,” Idris emphasized, countering Obi’s accusations of “lavish indulgence” and defending the government’s commitment to the nation’s recovery.

The clash highlights a growing debate on priorities within the Nigerian political landscape.
