NPFL Matchday 6 Review: Enugu Rangers, 3SC Lose, Akwa United Wins First Game Of 2023/2024 Season

Matchday 6 games in the Nigeria Professional Football League were played midweek across the country with 19 goals scored in total.

At the Okigwe Township stadium, Heartland FC of Owerri were held to a 1-1 draw by one of Nigeria’s representatives at the CAF Confederation Cup, Rivers United.

The Sani Abacha stadium played host to the tie between Kano Pillars and Bayelsa United which ended in a 3-0 win for the home side with goals from Mubarak Sani, Rabiu Ali, and Abba Adams.

In the South West derby at Ikenne, Remo Stars defeated Shooting Stars 3-0 with Sikiru Alimi getting a double in the 40th and 63rd minutes after Ahmed Akindele got the opener in the 20th minute.

League debutants, Sporting Lagos were pegged back after Jonathan Alukwu found his shooting range in a 2-1 win by Kwara United.

The ‘Afonja Warriors’ had their goals from Ejeh Isaiah and Ifeanyi Odinnaya.

Chris Nwaeze’s 13th-minute goal secured maximum points for Plateau United against Katsina United in Jos while NPFL champions Enyimba put aside their African Football League disappointment to make the trip to Minna.

However, the People Elephant could only pull a goaless draw.

Basement club Akwa United secured their first win of the 2023/2024 campaign against Gombe United with Kufre Ebong scoring the only goal of the game in the 35th minute.

In the rescheduled game that was played on Thursday evening, Chidiebere Nwobodo’s 60th minute goal was not enough for Enugu Rangers as a goal in each half from Alao Danbani and Stanley Ogabor secured a slim victory for the Pride of Benue, Lobi Stars, in Lafia.

The Flying Antelopes were leading the table before the NPFL fixtures on Wednesday and Thursday.
