Lagos and Kano have emerged as frontrunners in the race for the Federal Government’s Three Million Technical Talent (3MTT) program.

The Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, revealed that the first phase will see 2,040 trainees from Lagos and 1,628 from Kano. Although the selection criteria remain undisclosed, it appears that population plays a role, as these two states are Nigeria’s most populous.

As of October 19, 330,713 Nigerians have already applied for the 30,000 available positions, just one week after the applications opened. The closing date remains uncertain, and the program’s website continues to accept applications.

The 3MTT program, a part of the Renewed Hope agenda, aims to nurture Nigeria’s technical talent to drive its digital economy and position the nation as a net talent exporter.

The first phase, executed in collaboration with NITDA, involves various stakeholders and focuses on training and placing 30,000 technical talents.

This represents 1% of the overall target and encompasses skills that use technology to enhance various roles without directly involving tech creation, such as Digital Marketing, Project Management Software, Cloud Platforms Navigation, Data Analysis and Visualization, Search Engine Optimization (SEO), and more.

In Dr. Tijani’s words, “This first phase will be executed based on the framework co-created with key stakeholders, bridging government agencies, training providers, educational institutions, development agencies, and the private sector.” The race is on, and Lagos and Kano lead the way in this tech talent extravaganza.
