EU Commissioner for International Partnerships, Jutta Urpilainen, emphasized the EU’s dedication to reducing the high number of out-of-school children in the region by improving access to quality education and empowering the local youth.

She stated, “There is no education without teachers, and that’s why we also have to invest in teacher training.”

Urpilainen highlighted the multi-faceted objectives of the program, including providing vocational education and training for Nigerian youths, challenging harmful social norms, and empowering girls. The EU’s focus is on giving young people the skills they need to excel in the labor market.

In a move, the EU is not only targeting the youth but also involving them directly in the decision-making process, as Urpilainen emphasized the importance of creating spaces and structures where young people feel visible.

The EU recognizes Nigeria as a strategic partner in the West African region and is determined to uplift out-of-school children and provide quality education, especially for girls. The program will also offer direct assistance to families, cash transfers, social protection, and support various community-based initiatives.

The Northwest governors, represented by Gov. Umar Namadi of Jigawa, welcomed the EU’s support, stating that education is a top priority for the region. They expressed their commitment to using this support effectively to improve the educational system and social development.

The Minister of Education, Tahir Mamman, stressed the importance of empowering youth for the country’s development and called on state governors to prioritize education and youth empowerment.

The government is prepared to allocate 25 percent of the budget to education, focusing on addressing the challenges faced by out-of-school children and adolescent girls.

This EU initiative demonstrates a fresh and comprehensive approach to education and youth empowerment in the Northwest of Nigeria, with a strong commitment to addressing the region’s unique needs.
