70-year-old Justina Nwamalubia Obi was the cynosure of all eyes at the 49th Convocation ceremony of the University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN). She stole the show from over 800 colleague PhD graduands when the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Charles Arizechukwu Igwe announced her as special, having bagged her PhD at the age of 70 and thus became the first in the history of the university to do so.

Mrs. Obi earned the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Mass Communication.

The grandmother, alongside many others, were conferred with Higher Degrees and Diplomas on Saturday, June 12, 2021.

According her special recognition, Prof. Igwe said the feat was symbolic, as Mass Communication Department was as old as the university.

Dr. Obi studied Film Studies and conducted extensive research on “Perception of Aesthetic Elements on Nollywood Video Films by Students of Three Selected Universities in Southeast, Nigeria.”

Saturday’s event, which witnessed the conferment of PhDs, Masters, Postgraduate Diplomas, and Honorary Degrees on more than 3000 graduands, was the climax of the ceremony that began on Tuesday with the Vice-Chancellor’s media briefing at the Enugu campus of the university.
