Spain Beats Japan, Wins FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup

Nigeria finish tournament as 5th best side

Spain emerged winners of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Costa Rica on Monday morning (West African time) as they defeated champions Japan 3-1 in the final at the Estadio Nacional de Costa Rica in San Jose.

The Spaniards were unbeaten in the tournament to lift the title which is their first at the U-20 level.

In the third-place match played on Sunday night, Brazil thrashed Europeans champions, Netherlands 4-1 to claim the competition’s bronze medal.

The final rankings at the tournament placed Nigeria in fifth place as the best of the quarter-finalists after their 2-0 defeat in the nanda, of Netherlands.

Esther Onyenezide finished joint-third on the goalscorer chart with three goals.

The teenage attacking midfielder fell behind tournament top goalscorer Spain’s Inma Gabarro (7 goals) and Japan’s Maika Hamano (4 goals).
