Human rights activist, Omoyele Sowore, has called for the resignation or sack of the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, over the errors that occurred in the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

The activist and former presidential candidate of the African Action Alliance (AAC) also urged the Federal Government to scrap JAMB, arguing that it has no relevance anymore in Nigeria’s educational system.

Prime Business Africa reports that the JAMB registrar on Wednesday admitted there was a technical error that affected the results of 2025 UTME candidates, especially centres in Lagos and five South-east states.

JAMB had last week declared that out of 1.9 million candidates that sat for the examination, over 1.5 million scored below 200, reflecting a mass failure.

While addressing a press conference on Wednesday, Oloyede took responsibility for the error, which he said affected not less than 379,997 candidates in the five states of the South-east and Lagos.

While holding back tears in a rare emotional moment, the JAMB registrar apologised to the affected candidates and their parents/guardians over what happened.

He stated that the affected candidates will retake the examination starting from Friday, May 16 to 18.

A 19-year-old girl who participated in the 2025 UTME reportedly committed suicide last week after checking her result and saw a low score.

Reacting, Sowore said Oloyede ought to have resigned immediately.

“This is a country of really dangerous public officials; while the JAMB registrar is here forming, he regrets the monumental disaster he superintended upon that has claimed a young life, and instead of resigning immediately, he brought to the same press conference a bunch of callous yesmen to clap for him. #ScrapJAMB, Sack the incompetent Prof. Oloyede Now!,” Sowore wrote on his official X handle on Thursday.

In a tweet earlier on Wednesday, after JAMB admitted the errors, Sowore said shedding what he called “crocodile tears” is not a remedy for the damages caused by the ugly incident.

According to him, “The Registrar of the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (@JAMBHQ) Prof. Oloyede bears responsibility for the organisation’s egregious errors, which have devastatingly claimed a young life; shedding crocodile tears is not a remedy for these infractions.

“As a first step, he should resign, followed by a thorough investigation and possible prosecution for manslaughter. Moreover, JAMB must be scrapped.”
