2024 New York African Film Festival To Feature Nigerian Films

The 31st New York African Film Festival (NYAFF) is set to entertain audiences from May 8 to May 14, introducing them to the art of African cinema and storytelling. Presented by Film at Lincoln Center (FLC) and African Film Festival, Inc. (AFF), this year’s festival theme, “Convergence of Time,” delves into the interplay between historical legacies and contemporary narratives across over 30 countries. Boasting a lineup of 91 films spanning features, shorts, and documentaries, NYAFF guarantees a celebration of diverse voices and perspectives.

The festival begins with the North American premiere of “Over the Bridge” by Tolu Ajaji, a Nigerian drama that discusses the depths of corruption in Lagos. Following protagonist Folarin on a quest for truth amidst a government project gone awry, the film navigates the intricacies of the city’s social and political landscapes.

At the heart of the festival lies “Perpetual Connections,” a shorts program showcasing a compilation of storytelling styles and themes. From intimate character studies to bold experiments in form, these short films exemplify the versatility and ingenuity of African filmmakers.

Bringing the festival to a close is the New York premiere of “Dilli Dark” by Dibakar Das Roy, a riveting narrative of ambition and identity against the backdrop of India’s complex history. Through the journey of Nigerian MBA candidate Michael Okeke, who straddles academia and the drug trade, the film delves into themes of colonialism and racism.

In addition to film screenings, NYAFF offers special events like a Town Hall on “Art & Activism” at The Africa Center and a Master Class with veteran filmmaker Ngozi Onwurah, exploring cinema’s role as a tool for social change.

Tickets for NYAFF are available from April 11, offering audiences the chance to immerse themselves in a weeklong celebration of African cinema and culture.
