2023: Obi Resigns From PDP, Withdraws From Presidential Primary

Former Anambra State Governor, Mr Peter Obi has resigned his membership of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and consequently withdrew from the party presidential primary.

Obi said he has equally resigned from the ward level which became effective from Friday, 20th May, 2022.

This was disclosed in a letter titled “Resignation From Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Withdrawal From the Presidential Contest,” signed by Obi and addressed to the PDP national chairman, Senator Iyorchia Ayu.

The letter which dated 24th May 2022, was received at the party national secretariat in Abuja on Wednesday, 25th May 2022.

Obi who was the PDP Vice presidential candidate in 2019 election, said it has been a great honour to contribute to nation building efforts through the party, but recent developments within the party has made it practically impossible for him to continue pursuing his aspiration.

He further stated that he remains committed to making sacrifices for the good of the country.

The letter reads:

“Resignation From Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Withdrawal From the Presidential Contest”

“I am writing to intimate you of my resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which was conveyed to the Chairman of Agulu Ward 2. Anaocha LGA Anambra, effective Friday 20 May, 2022. Consequently, am by this letter informing you of my withdrawal for the PDP Presidential Primaries.

“It has been a great honour to contribute to nation-building efforts through our party. Unfortunately, recent developments within our party make it practically impossible to continue participating and making such constructive contributions.

“Our national challenges are deep-seated and require that we each make profound sacrifices towards rescuing our country. My commitment to rescuing Nigeria remains firm, even if the route differs.

“I wish to thank you personally for your graciousness and leadership. I wish you well and best of luck in the service of country.”
