World Athletics Championship: Amusan Jumps Into Immortality, Claims Gold Medal, N65m

Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan became the first Nigerian to win gold medal at the World Athletics Championships in the 100m Hurdles event after clocking 12.06s in the early hours of Monday morning reports Prime Business Africa.

The multiple hurdle jumper however had a wind guage of 2.5m/s which eventually meant the feat was not declared a world record.

The Championship is in its 40th year since it began.

The Nigerian contingent to the Championship in Oregon, USA had not won a medal but on the last day of the Championship, Amusan and compatriot Ese Brume made their country proud with gold and silver medals.

Amusan in the semifinals had ran a time of 12.12s.

She however repeated her blistering form in the final despite the high wind recorded and was rewarded with the sum of $100,000 (N65million) by the organisers, World Athletics.

Ese Brume completed a weekend of double delight for Nigeria as she claimed the silver medal the women’s long jump event by jumping to a time of 7.2 metres.

Brume had won bronze in Qatar 2019 World Athletics Championship and another bronze medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games which was held in 2021 due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

Nigeria finished joint 13th on the medals table with the Dominican Republic.
