Why I Resigned As LP Campaign DG – Okupe

Director General of Labour Party Presidential Campaign Council, Dr. Doyin Okupe has resigned.

This was confirmed in letter personally signed by Okupe dated December 20, 2022, addressed to LP presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi on Tuesday.

Okupe in the letter said it is better for him to resign than allow his personal travails in recent times, become a source of distraction to the party he has invested so much in.

The letter reads, “Dear Peter, you will recall that I briefed you yesterday about my travails in seeking justice and clearing my name using the Nigerian Legal System to pursue same.

“I have invested too much in your campaign to allow my personal travails to become a source of distraction.

“In the circumstances, I have opted to step aside and plead that you appoint a new campaign DG who can continue the assignment with zero distraction.”

It would be recalled that Okupe, who was a Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to President Olusegun Obasanjo and Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs to President Goodluck Jonathan, was on Monday convicted by the Federal High Court in Abuja which found him guilty of receiving over N200 million cash from former National Security Adviser (NSA), Sambo Dasuki.

Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu who ruled on the suit filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) against Okupe, held that the actions of the defendant violated the Money Laundering Act.

The court sentenced Okupe to two years imprisonment with an option of a fine.

Okupe had shortly after the ruling on Monday, tweeted through his verified handle that it was the work of his enemies.

In a tweet on Tuesday, Okupe while announcing his resignation said:

“It’s time to step aside. But I am with PO and the Obidients and the Presidential Campaigns till God gives us victory in Jesus Name.”

Prior to the court incident, Okupe had face opposition when members of a faction of Labour Party in the in his state of Ogun declared that he has been suspended.
