Watch The 2024 Grammy Awards Live In Nigeria

As the highly anticipated 66th Grammy Awards Ceremony approaches, all eyes in the Nigerian and African entertainment industry are fixed on the new Best African Music Performance category.

Originally set to be an all-Nigerian affair, the category witnessed a noteworthy inclusion, ‘Water’ by South Africa’s Tyla, adding a diverse touch to the lineup of nominees. The event is slated to hold at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, United States.

The acclaimed South African comedian and TV personality, Trevor Noah, is set to host the award show for the fourth consecutive time. Noah, known for his wit and humour, also received a Grammy nomination for his 2022 Netflix comedy special, ‘I Wish You Would,’ in the ‘Best Comedy Album’ category.

The Grammy festivities would kick off with the premiere ceremony, broadcasting live from the Peacock Theater at 15:30 in Los Angeles and 10:30 pm Nigerian time. The main award ceremony is scheduled to commence at 20:00 in LA, corresponding to 3 am Nigerian time.

For those eager to catch the action, the 66th Grammys will be aired live on CBS, the American commercial broadcast television and radio network.

Additionally, tribute performances will honor the legacies of legendary musicians who have left an indelible mark on the industry.

Turning our attention to the nominees from Nigeria:

Burna Boy

Burna Boy, a seasoned Grammy nominee, has four nominations at the 66th Grammys. ‘City Boys’ is his entry in the Best African Music Performance category. Burna Boy is the first African artist to receive a Grammy nomination for five consecutive years (2019-2023). With its rich lyrical and vocal delivery, ‘City Boys’ stands out as a strong contender in the category.

Davido

Davido earns his first Grammy nomination with his timeless album, securing nods in three categories: Best Global Album (‘Timeless’), Best Global Music Performance (‘Feel’), and Best African Music Performance (‘Unavailable’ featuring Musa Keys). ‘Unavailable’ stands as a favorite in the Best African Music Performance category, boasting lyrical depth and a Zulu-themed video.

Ayra Starr

Ayra Starr’s Grammy nomination is noteworthy as ‘Rush’ is nominated in the Best African Music Performance category despite not being released within the eligibility frame. At the age of 21, Ayra Starr becomes the youngest Nigerian to receive a Grammy nomination.

Asake feat. Olamide

‘Amapiano’ earns distinction as the only song predominantly sung in an African language (Yoruba) among the nominees. Featuring Olamide, ‘Amapiano’ makes history as the first African rap nomination at the Grammys.
