UNN Students Defy ASUU Strike, Hold Cultural Day, Crown New ‘King’

By Akuma Elijah

The Faculty of Arts Students Association (FASA), University of Nigeria, Nsukka on Thursday February 17, 2022 held its  annual Cultural Day, despite initial talks about  postponing the event.

Earlier in the week, a memo stating the supposed suspension of the event was circulated, following  declaration of a one-month  industrial action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, which it said was to warn Nigeria’s federal government to live up to its agreement with university teachers.

The memo, purportedly signed by the Acting President of FASA, Mr.  Prince Moronu, had cited ongoing warning strike by lecturers  as major reason for postponing  the Cultural Day and FASA Week programmes.

But, in an interesting twist,a disclaimer signed by the Acting FASA President, Moronu Prince was released on the scheduled day of the event stating that the event would hold as planned.

Prime Business  Africa’s Campus Correspondent observed that the conflicting signals and the ensuing confusion affected student turn-out for the FASA Cultural Day.

In line with its long-standing tradition for the  Cultural Day event allows the student body, the students’ Chief Priest (Ezemmuo) crowned king (Igwe) and Queen (Ezenwanyi) to oversee the cultural affairs of the students.

The coronation rituals  stirred mixed feelings  students following display of seemingly fetish performances  and diabolic incantations that heralded the coronation of the new Igwe and his wife, the Eze Nwanyi.

The newly-crowned Igwe; Chief Godswill Anyim, the Aguba Ndieze 1 of FASA, a 300-level student of the  Department of Theatre and Film Studies (TFS), expressed delight at his coronation while promising to dutifully carry out his responsibilities to the satisfaction of all students.

The Eze nwanyi Chizaram Nwachukwu, (Iheanagwo onaele), a 100-level student of Department of Theatre and Film Studies (TFS),  also expressed happiness and  promised to give all of her best in line with the University of philosophy and inclination to preserving African culture.

The newly-coronated Igwe and his ‘Lolo’ will  represent the Faculty of Arts Students Association (FASA) in every traditional event  within and outside the school
