UNN Students Advised To Embrace Self Development

Students of the University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN) have been advised to imbibe the attitude of self-development, discipline and law-abiding.

Dean of the Faculty of Physical Sciences, of the University, Prof. Ogbonnaya Igwe, gave the advice during the Student Union Government (SUG) week programme.

The SUG Week is a one-week event set to run from Tuesday, 24th to Friday, 27th of January 2023

On the first day of the event titled “Students’ mentorship Symposium” held at Princess Alexander Auditorium (PAA) in the institution on 24th January, Prof. Igwe stated that UNN Students have the opportunity for self-development and should utilise it for their good later in life.

 

Igwe, who was described as a man with a sense of humour told the students that reading is not the only reason why they are in school.

“Coming to UNN is one of the most beautiful things that can happen to anyone. We know the quality we have. Have in mind that you are here to develop yourself. Take it seriously, don’t play with it.

“Why are you here? You are here to develop yourself not only to study. Hence always try and engage in extra curriculum activities. You are a multi-purpose personality, so be innovative. Engage in school politics, business and skills,” Prof. Igwe advised the students.

“Start thinking about your graduation and know that passing exams are different from being able to defend a certificate. So in any area, you are studying, do not stop there, continue to transform your thinking faculty. Do not allow that future to die. The future is yours,” he added.

The Dean of students affairs, UNN, Prof. Edwin Omeje, while addressing the students told them to be union minded but in doing so, be mindful of the constitution and other relevant laws.

“I want to beg you, do not be a lawbreaker. Be union minded, but in doing unionism know that everything has a process. The fight for your right is very premium, but fight with wisdom.”

Edwin promised to do everything to make sure that students succeed in the University.

“My role is to raise leaders from a nation. I will continue to do my best to support you. I am the dean of all students. Live like humans, so we can solve your problems.”

A former SUG vice president, Chinecherem Jennifer in her speech, pointed out that making first grades is different from learning.

“There is a big difference between making Grade As and learning. You can make first class, yet you will not know anything because you did not expose yourself to certain things. For you to be physically, socially, spiritually and emotionally stable, you must be exposed.

“Get involved, surround yourself with the right persons, sharpen yourself and never stop learning,” she stated.

She urged the students to be prayerful, dedicated and Focused.

In an interview with the SUG vice president, Comr. Kenneth Victory who organised day one of the SUG week said that SUG week is an event aimed at bringing students together for social impact.

“SUG week is a one-week program organised to give room for students to interact and connect. This first day of the event is aimed at guiding the students so that after graduation, they can be useful in society. You can make the first class as a student, but after graduation, what next?”

Among other dignitaries that also encouraged the students at the event to work hard is Hon. Barr Frank Agbowo, Special Adviser to the Enugu State governor; Jerry Akintomide, who represented press pay.ng (an organisation that provides loans and scholarships for students; Nnabuogo Chidiebere Michael, an alumnus that represented the president of UNN Alumni Association, Lady Doris Okoroh.
