Former US president Donald Trump demanded to join last year’s Capitol riot in a bid to overturn the 2020 elections, a congressional panel heard on Tuesday night.

A White House committee investigating the 6 January 2021 incident was informed that Mr Trump knew the crowd amassed in Washington was armed and could turn violent, but wanted security precautions loosened because his supporters were not there to attack him.

Trump took exceptions to his staff trying to stop him.

In extraordinary testimony monitored on CNN, top White Houseaide Cassidy Hutchinson claimed the former president demanded to march to the Capitol even as the riot was underway.

When the former US President was being convinced to hold back, he threw his lunch plate to the wall.

She said she overheard Mr Trump say “something to the effect of: ‘You know, I don’t effing care that they have weapons. They’re not here to hurt me. They can march to the Capitol from here. Let the people in.”
