Enugu State Governorship aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Professor Barth Nnaji has decried the spate of violent clashes and killings in the South Eastern states ahead of the 2023 general elections reports Prime Business Africa.
Nnaji was guest of Arise News on Monday morning on The Morning Show where he also spoke on the zoning formula for the upcoming elections.
“The Governor of Anambra state (Professor Chukwuma Soludo) is really trying to engage those who are doing this (violence) but you have to find them to engage them,” Professor Nnaji said.
“I believe that there must be some degree of political sponsorship going on in some places in the nation and this is something that the people who are doing it should be able to stop.
“I think that in other parts of the country we have this situation – but in the South East – and what the Governor of Enugu has done is zoning.
“And the fact that we have been able to maintain peace here helps because the people of Enugu in the North-Central zone are not fighting to take power.
“The people are not using violence and that allows us to continue to move the process in hope that we have two candidates that are credible to emerge.
Specifically on zoning formula for elective posts, Nnaji responded:
“If you look at the whole country, this zoning actually works. When you say you don’t want to zone, then people get upset that you have the government.
“But the party can decide that they don’t want to zone but that they simply want to throw open the candidacy to all parts of the nation. It’s all about fairness and it helps to reduce anxiety of people.
“Second, it makes young people understand that they are deprived of being part of the political system,” the onetime Science and Technology minister concluded.
