Sokoto State governor, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal has won the Sokoto South senatorial district election.
According to the Returning Officer of the election, Prof Abubakar Abdullahi Bagudo, who announced the result, Tambuwal, a two-term governor and candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) polled 100,860 votes to defeat his closest rival, the All Progressives Congress (APC) and incumbent senator, Abdullahi Danbaba Dambuwa, who scored 95,884 votes.
Prof Bagudo announced the results on Sunday at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) office in Bodinga Local Government Area of the state.
It could be recalled that no clear winner emerged in the March 18 National Assembly Elections in Sokoto state which made INEC declare the entire eleçtion inconclusive.
Tambuwal, who had been a Speaker of the House of Representatives, where he represented the Kebbe/Tambuwal Federal Constituency from 2011 to 2015, is returning to the National Assembly, this time to the upper legislative chamber.
He had earlier contested the PDP presidential primary but stepped down for Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, who later became the party’s presidential candidate for the 2023 election.
