Salah, Van Dijk On Target In Liverpool’s Win Against Aston Villa

Liverpool beat Aston Villa 3-1 Monday evening to climb to 6th place in the Premier League with 35 points from 15 games as the season restarts after the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, reports Prime Business Africa.

Salah scored his 55th away goal in the Premier League for Liverpool and equalled the record held by Michael Owen as early as the 5th minute.

The Egyptian received the ball inside the box from Andy Robertson who latched onto a crossfield pass by Trent Alexander-Arnold and finished with aplomb.

The first half could easily have ended in a goal-fest but both sides especially Aston Villa were guilty of missing decent chances with Olie Watkins the most culpable.

Former Cameroon international Joel Matip had a goal disallowed for offside in the first half.

Salah set up Virgil van Dijk for Liverpool’s second goal whose low volley inside the Villa box saw the ball nestle at the bottom left corner in the 37th minute.

Watkins thought he scored in the 46th minute when he latched onto a through pass to tuck the ball home but the goal was ruled out for offside.

John McGinn was presented with an opportunity to reduce the arrreas shortly afterwards but his header from an awkward cross was weak.

Villa continued their pressure and it eventually paid off with Watkins heading past Allison in the 59th minute.

Darwin Nunez embarked on a may run with less than 20 minutes left on the clock, evading the attention of two Villa defenders but eventually sliced his shot wide when it mattered most.

Jurgen Klopp introduced Liverpool youngster Stefan Bajcetic who scored his first Premier League goal – on his debut – in the 81st minute when he took a delicate touch to round goalkeeper Robin Olsen.

Una Emery’s Aston Villa are 12th in the table on 18 points.
