Nigeria Professional Football League sides Rivers United and Plateau United on Tuesday were drawn against Libyan opponents in the 2023 CAF Confederation Cup third round stage playoff round draw following their elimination from the CAF Champions League qualifying stages reports Prime Business Africa.
Rivers will face El Nasr Benghazi while Plateau United have fixtures against Al Achdar on November 2 and 9. The Nigerian clubs will host the first leg fixtures.
North African sides Wydad Athletic of Morocco and Esperance of Tunisia defeated Rivers United and Plateau United 6-0 and 1-0 respectively over the weekend in the return legs of their qualifiers.
Governor Nyesom Wike had tasked Rivers United to defeat Wydad and get rewarded with the sum of $40,000 per player but the players have lost out of the largesse on the back of their setback.
In the first legs played in Port Harcourt and Abuja, NPFL champions Rivers had defeated their opponts Wydad 2-1 while Plateau United won 2-1 against Esperance thereby progressing to the Group stages of the CAF Champions League on 7-2 and 2-2 aggregates.
Esperance however made it to the group stages at the expense of Plateau United on the away goal rule.
Kwara United were eliminated from the Confederation Cup qualifying stages and are out of reckoning in any of the CAF interclub competitions.
