Racers Grand Prix 100m Feat Excites Amusan

Nigeria’s Oluwatobiloba Amusan is elated to have come out on top in the women’s 100-metre hurdles final at the Racers Grand Prix in Kingston, Jamaica, on Saturday.

Running in lane 5, the 26-year-old world record holder demonstrated her class as she sailed over the barriers in a season’s best time of 12.57s, dipping ahead of America’s Tia Jones (12.72s), with Jamaica’s Megan Tapper clocking 12.80s for third place.

Following the feat, the African, Commonwealth, and World champion expressed her delight and gratitude to God in a post on Facebook.

“Grateful to God for my victory and season’s best at the Racers Grand Prix in Jamaica, clocking 12.57s. Step by step,” she wrote alongside the picture of the finish line, which shows her breasting the tape ahead of other runners.

The 2023 edition of the Racers Grand Prix took place on Saturday, June 3, at National Stadium in Kingston, Jamaica, featuring 10 core events for both men and women and two discretionary events.

Racers Grand Prix is the brainchild of Racers T&F Club Chairman Glen Mills. It is now a part of the World Athletics (formally the International Association of Athletics Federations, or IAAF) Continental Tour Silver level.

Aside from being the current World, Commonwealth, and African champion in the 100 m hurdles, Tobi also holds the meet record in those three competitions.

She became the first ever Nigerian world champion and world record holder in an athletics event when she won the 2022 World Championships 100 m hurdles gold medal, setting the current world record of 12.12 seconds in the semi-final, followed up by a wind-assisted 12.06 seconds in the final.

Tobi won back-to-back Commonwealth and African titles in 2018 and 2022 in the 100 m hurdles and is also a two-time African Games champion in the event.
