Premier League Clubs Keen To Embark On Brief Break Until December 26 Due To Covid-19

With only two English Premier League games confirmed for Saturday, a number of Premier League clubs are reportedly becoming open to the idea of a circuit breaker until December 26 in the hope of regaining control of the coronavirus situation.

The Boxing Day fixtures in the Premier League is iconic and would almost always get the approval of the Premier League as a body even in the face of complaints of too many matches that players are faced with.

Aston Villa versus Burnley (4pm Nigerian time) and Leeds United against Arsenal (6.30pm Nigerian time) are the matches still open to be played while the rest scheduled for Saturday have been postponed by the Premier League due to the outbreak of coronavirus cases in the camps of the team’s affected.

Brentford manager Thomas Frank had called for the full round of Premier League fixtures to be postponed this weekend, in addition to the League Cup quarter-finals, in order to help deal with the COVID-19 outbreaks at a number of clubs.

“We think we should postpone the full round of Premier games this weekend. COVID cases are going through the roof at all Premier League clubs, everyone is dealing with it and having problems,” Frank told reporters at a press conference.

“To postpone this round and also the Carabao Cup round would give everyone a week at least, or four or five days to clean and do everything at the training ground so everything is clean and you break the chain.”

Brentford have recently had an outbreak in their squad, while the Bees saw their clash with Manchester United, scheduled for Tuesday, called off due to positive cases in the Red Devils camp.

Burnley’s match against Watford on Wednesday was also called off due to coronavirus issues, while Leicester City’s clash with Tottenham Hotspur, initially scheduled for Thursday, suffered postponed.
